Danielle DeBoe Harper takes on weddings

Although every bride wants the wedding she dreamed of as a child, planning the dream wedding isn’t always a fairy tale.

Danielle DeBoe Harper is here to help.

She recently launched a new business, Weddings & Parties by Room Service that we wrote about in our January Elegant Wedding package, with her business partner, Jennie Doran to meet the needs of brides-to-be.

Her business will be a vendor at the 2nd annual Boutique Bridal Bazaar from noon to 4 p.m. on Jan. 20 at smARTspace inside 78th Street Studios. The bazaar, hosted by Cleveland bridal boutique Something White, is a way for Northeast Ohio brides to find wedding inspiration by connecting with unique, local bridal vendors, ranging in focus from fashion to cuisine. Tickets are available on  the event's website for $5 in advance or $10 on the day of the event.

Harper created Room Service, a gift and clothing boutique now located in Ohio City, nearly six years ago, opened the now shuttered Dredgers Union on East Fourth Street, and recently started Weddings & Parties as a way to return to her roots.

“When I opened Room Service, I was a hyper-visual person,” Harper says. “People would like the environment and ask if we did weddings.”

Initially a lack of time and staff prevented her from venturing into wedding planning, but eventually “life intervened and opened up the time,” she says.

Planning her 2012 wedding gave Harper a new perspective on the needs of brides-to-be. She stresses there is no formula to creating the perfect wedding, and being a bride taught her to ask the right questions in the planning phase.

Last year, Harper attended the bazaar as a would-be bride. This year, she is excited to participate as a vendor.

“We have a booth set up, and we’re excited about the look of it,” Harper says.  Expect to see handmade favors and an artistic display from the visual-minded entrepreneur.

“We’re trying to show the breadth of creativity that we can bring to somebody’s wedding,” she says.

Hunt in the 216 Sends Shoppers Scavenging

Downtown's new retail store recently had shoppers vying to solve mysterious Cleveland-centric riddles in pursuit of a grand prize.

Sean Bilovecky of Dredgers Union spearheaded Hunt in the 216, a scavenger hunt for the store's fans. Riddles were posted twice a week on the store's blog and Facebook page, leading Cleveland-savvy hunters to locations around the city. At each location, participants found one of four cards that formed a secret phrase. The winner was the first person to get to the store and recite the phrase.

“It was a fun way to incorporate our Facebook followers and put a little bit more of an exciting spin on a holiday giveaway,” says Bilovecky.

Creating the riddles nearly stumped him.

“I was getting ready in the morning and was like, ‘Maybe I’ll just write ridiculous poems about it,'” says Bilovecky. “It kind of makes it whimsical and doesn’t make it too dark and evil, like the Da Vinci Code movie.”

The hunt began on Nov. 14; the final clue was posted on Black Friday. Only 20 minutes after the store opened that day, the grand prize was claimed. The winner, identified as Kelly F. on the store's website, took her lunch break at 10 a.m. to ensure she’d have enough time to figure out the clue, says Bilovecky. She received a $100 gift card to the Dredgers Union. She'll also get to choose the name of one piece in Dredgers Union's spring 2012 collection and receive that item in her size.

Here are the riddles and solutions:

1. From the heart of downtown I headed due West.
I was craving a hot dog, and wanted the best.
After 58 blocks I entered this place,
and saw a peculiar bulletin space…

2. From the heart of downtown East I must go,
To see an independent moving picture show.
Next to the theater stands an Irishman’s bar,
within it a cigarette machine, to the back but not far.

3. From the heart of downtown a bit South I would travel,
To trees and grass where nearby clues would unravel.
This open air space in honor of old Abe,
Has as its neighbor a beanery in its shade.

4. In the heart of downtown this time I will stay,
On this glorious, victorious, final clue day.
To a street formerly known as Sheriff I will go,
And find a place that sells a “crush,” and the stuff we call Joe.

Then I’m gonna book it to DU and win!

1. The Happy Dog. The clue was located on the bulletin board by the door.
2. Parnell's Pub, next to the Cedar-Lee movie theater. The clue was located on top of the cigarette machine.
3. Civilization, a coffee shop off Lincoln Park in Tremont. The clue was located near the fliers.
4. Erie Island, the coffee shop next to Dredgers Union. (The "crush" refers to Erie Island's name for its paninis.) The clue was located by the cash register.

Bilovecky says he hopes to have three or four Hunts in the 216 in 2012.

Just Add Water

At first look its as thin as a sheet of paper or even one of those Shrinky Dinks you used to play with when you were younger. But just add some water and it becomes a fully functional (and may we say fashionable) vase. Designed in 35 different colors, patterns and shapes, Vazu Flower Vases based in Cleveland, are also fairly inexpensive ($3.99 to $9.99) and can be reused numerous times. If only someone would send us flowers ...
